The Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) is offering free assistance and information to community members looking to enroll in health insurance plans, with certified professionals in seven locations throughout the state.
MAPS Immigrant Integration caseworkers, who have all been certified as Health Insurance Navigators by the state, are available to help community members review their eligibility, learn about healthcare coverage choices, and enroll in a health plan that meets their health and financial needs.
The free service is provided by appointment at MAPS offices in Cambridge, Somerville, Brighton, Everett, Lowell, Dorchester, and Framingham in Portuguese, Cabo Verdean Creole, and English.
The open enrollment period for those seeking to renew or enroll in employment-based or private health insurance plans on the Massachusetts Health Connector goes through January 23rd, while community members looking to sign up for MassHealth insurance can do so anytime.
Since February 2023, MAPS has assisted almost 4,500 community members with health insurance applications, renewals, and other related issues. This service is funded by the Massachusetts Health Connector, the state’s marketplace for health and dental insurance.
“We are very proud of the work that our caseworkers have done so far in helping our communities navigate our complex healthcare system,” said Alirio Pereira, MA, MAPS Chief Program Officer. “This is an essential and much-requested service, and we are confident that our certified health insurance navigators will be able to help even more people navigate the state’s insurance marketplace, leaving no one behind”.
MAPS health insurance navigators work with uninsured community members, including those who have never been insured, informing them about available options and how to enroll, and helping them review eligibility and apply for coverage.
Health insurance is crucial for ensuring access to necessary medical care at a more affordable cost. It not only covers a range of services, from preventive screenings to emergency treatments, but also provides financial security in the event of illness or injury. Ultimately, health insurance offers peace of mind, reduces the risk of medical debt, and supports overall well-being.
