The Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) is looking for more sponsors and players for its upcoming 5th Annual Chip In For Charity Golf Tournament on Thursday, September 15, 2022, at the Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland, MA. Businesses and organizations interested in sponsoring the special anniversary tournament are encouraged to reach out to MAPS by August 22, 2022, and players and luncheon guests are invited to register by September 9.
The event aims to raise enough funds to expand the operations of the MAPS Senior Center in Cambridge to five days per week from the current four.
To reach the #5Years5Days goal, MAPS hopes to raise $75,000 at this year’s special tournament, presented by Anniversary Sponsors Couto Management Group. The funds would allow MAPS to open the Senior Center on Fridays, a longtime dream of the health and social services organization and the many Brazilian, Cabo Verdean, and Portuguese seniors it serves.
“Opening the Senior Center from Monday through Friday has been our goal for a long time, but unfortunately, it has always been just beyond our reach,” said MAPS CEO Paulo Pinto, MPA. “This year, we are hopeful that the network of friends and supporters we have nurtured over the past four editions of the MAPS Chip In for Charity Golf Tournament will help us make that dream a reality for our seniors.”
This year’s tournament will take place for the first time at the beautiful Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland, MA. The event starts at 8 AM with a breakfast reception and registration, followed by a shotgun start at 9 AM, and then a Luncheon from 2:00 to 3:00 PM.
“We have a very ambitious goal for this fifth edition, but knowing how our community rallied behind our seniors in the previous tournaments, we are confident we will be able to reach it,” said Rui Domingos, CEO of the MIT Federal Credit Union and tournament co-chair. “Everyone who knows about the MAPS Senior Center recognizes its importance and what it means to our seniors.”
The MAPS Senior Center in Cambridge serves more than 40 vulnerable Brazilian, Cabo Verdean, and Portuguese seniors on a regular basis, and many more are assisted periodically each year. It is a linguistically and culturally competent space designed to prevent isolation and promote wellness through case management and daily social and recreational activities, including exercise classes, arts and crafts, and nutritious meals.
“Every time I visit the Senior Center, I am overwhelmed by our seniors’ joy and warmth, and it gives me so much pleasure to help them,” said Walter Sousa, tournament co-chair and owner of Inman Square Wine & Spirits. “If you are in a position of being able to help make a difference, it is your responsibility to step up and chip in.”
There are still several sponsorship opportunities available, ranging from Anniversary Sponsorship at $5,000 to Tee/ Green at $300. Businesses and organizations interested in sponsoring should visit maps-inc.org/golf or contact Andrew Carten, MAPS Development Manager, at 617-864-7600, or acarten@maps-inc.org.
