The Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) raised $68,000 at the sixth edition of its Chip In for Charity Golf Tournament on Friday, September 8, 2023, at the Juniper Hill Golf Course in Northborough, MA. The event supports the health and social services organization’s senior center in Cambridge.
Co-chaired by Rui Domingos, President and CEO of MIT Federal Credit Union, and Walter Sousa, owner of Inman Square Wine and Spirits, the tournament gathered approximately 115 community members, business leaders, volunteers, and supporters, including a record seven female players.
“We could not be happier with our community, who once again showed up in force to participate in the tournament and support our seniors,” said Rui Domingos. “It’s wonderful to see so many business and community leaders and friends take time out of their busy schedules to support such a worthy cause,” added Walter Sousa.
“I am truly inspired by our community’s continued and outstanding generosity,” said Paulo Pinto, MPA, MAPS CEO. “This year we were able to bring some of our seniors to attend our Luncheon and give out delicious homemade treats that they lovingly prepared at the center to thank the players, and it was also wonderful to see the love and support they received. We were hoping to raise $70K, but the stormy weather forced us to end the tournament earlier than expected, which left us a bit short of our goal.”
The funds raised with the tournament will allow MAPS to continue to maintain the senior center in Cambridge open five days a week for the next year.
The best foursome of the tournament was composed of Richard Mandel, John Howard, Phil Summers, and Matt Davison.
In second place were Richard DiSciullo, Antonio Braga, Steve Santos, and Flynn Manalaysay.
The third place went to Tony Bernardo, Michael Mello, Michael Allen, and Keith Bernier.
Filipe Cabral had the longest drive in the Men’s category, while Jeff Dwyer placed the ball closest to the pin. Carla Michaud had the longest drive of the tournament in the Women’s category and also placed the ball closest to the pin, for the second year in a row.
The tournament was once again presented by Dunkin’ franchise owner Couto Management Group. The group’s CEO, Salvi Couto, also attended the event and brought along two foursomes.
“It’s fantastic to participate in an event like this because we get to have fun with old and new friends and, at the same time, raise money to support a great cause,” he said.
