All of us at Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) are saddened by the domestic violence murder of Neiriane Pereira Da Silva, a Brazilian immigrant who was allegedly killed by her husband Edvardo Gomes Da Silva, also from Brazil, at their home in Framingham on Sunday, July 17, according to investigators.
We extend our deepest condolences to Neiriane’s family, friends, loved ones, and all those mourning her death. This tragedy is a stark reminder of why we must continue to advocate for women’s rights and safety. Domestic violence murder is rarely an isolated incident but is often the final act in a pattern of abuse that has escalated over time.
We can help break the cycle of violence by doing more to prevent domestic abuse homicides from happening. We urge everyone to be active bystanders and never ignore the signs of a violent domestic relationship – extreme jealousy, possessiveness, controlling and demeaning behavior, harassment, humiliation, etc.
It is crucial that all of us listen to and support victims without judgment when they reach out, and that we never underestimate a cry for help. This sad event also reminds us that domestic violence can occur in many different relationships and contexts, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, race, financial situation, or level of education. It highlights the extreme importance of continuing to educate our communities on what constitutes domestic violence, how to prevent it, and where to access help and resources.
