All of us at Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) are saddened by another case of domestic violence registered in our communities. Veronica Goncalves, 48, was found brutally murdered in the driveway of her home in Brockton on Wednesday, November 2nd, 2022. According to the authorities she was allegedly a victim of a “targeted attack” by a person she had been in a relationship with for several years. Goncalves was a mother of two and a grandmother.
We extend our deepest condolences to Veronica’s family, friends, loved ones, and all those mourning her death. This tragedy is the fourth registered case of domestic violence murder in the Portuguese-speaking community this year.
Our Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault team has reach out to local partners to offer assistance. This tragedy reminds us of why we must continue to advocate for women’s rights and the importance of continuing to educate our communities on what constitutes domestic violence, how to prevent it, and where to access help and resources.
It is crucial that all of us listen to and support victims without judgment when they reach out, and that we never underestimate a cry for help. Domestic violence can occur in many different relationships and contexts, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, race, financial situation, or level of education. This case highlights the extreme importance of continuing to educate our communities on what constitutes domestic violence, how to prevent it, and where to access help and resources.
