All of us at MAPS were deeply troubled to learn about the apparent murder of 28-year-old Brazilian immigrant Kethlen Paula Alves Trindade DaRocha in Marlborough, MA, yesterday, November 29, 2023, allegedly shot by her boyfriend, Marlon Moreira Costa, who then committed suicide.
While the investigation is ongoing and we learn more details, our team of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault advocates has contacted local authorities and partners to offer our language capacity and support.
We extend our deepest and most sincere condolences to Kethlen’s family, friends, and loved ones and hope they can find the strength to cope with such an enormous tragedy. According to her friends, she moved to the U.S. only two years ago, looking to improve her life and assist her family in Brazil. A GoFundMe page has been set up by her friends to assist with funeral expenses, and it can be accessed here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/37ibk5bn20
According to news reports, the murder took place Wednesday morning around 10 am, and the perpetrator had threatened Kethlen the night before at his home in Marlborough. Although we may never eradicate domestic violence or completely prevent domestic violence-related murders, we strongly encourage everyone to remain vigilant and never overlook signs of a violent domestic relationship. These indicators might include extreme jealousy, possessiveness, controlling or demeaning behavior, harassment, humiliation, and similar behaviors.
We must all listen to and support victims and potential victims without judgment when they reach out and never underestimate or ignore a cry for help.
If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call 911. To access help and resources regarding domestic violence and learn more about the MAPS Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Program, please visit www.maps-inc.org/dvsa/
