The Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) is deeply disappointed in the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn  Roe v. Wade, which will ultimately restrict an individual’s right to an abortion. By ending nearly 50 years of federal protections, the Court is putting the physical and mental health of millions of women in America at risk.

This decision will disproportionately impact the most vulnerable populations, such as immigrants, communities of color, and those with low income, who may have to travel long distances to receive abortions. A new generation of women will be forced to face a future where they cannot seek safe, affordable, and legal abortions.

MAPS will continue to always advocate for women’s right to make decisions over their bodies. We strongly believe that the very personal decision to end a pregnancy should be made in the context of legal, regulated healthcare, without shame or fear of prosecution.

It is important to know that abortion remains protected in Massachusetts, even after the Supreme Court decision. We stand in solidarity with all fighting for women’s rights and access to health care around the world.  Women’s Rights are Human Rights.
