We can all do #OurPart to prevent domestic violence.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We want to encourage you to be an active bystander and take individual action towards implementing the changes we need to get us closer to a world without domestic violence and abuse.

How can I do #MyPart to End Domestic Violence?

• Always believe victims and survivors;
• Never shame a victim of violence for “not leaving”;
• Understand that victims might struggle with financial independence or other restrictions;
• Be a source of support for the people in your life by getting to know what resources are available in your area;
• If someone reaches out to you, listen without judging and offer to help, regardless of their choices;
• If you don’t immediately know how to help, advise them to reach out to their medical provider;
• Remember that abuse often happens behind closed doors and may not be evident;
• Always keep in mind that violence and abuse can take many forms;
• Teach your children about what it means to be in a healthy relationship;
• Use social media to raise awareness among your peers;
• Remind victims that they are loved and deserve a life without violence;
• Support your local shelters and domestic violence programs;
• Encourage a culture of consent in your home;
• Speak up when you witness any form of violence or abuse;
• Hold your friends and loved ones accountable when they tell a racist/sexist joke, and remember that words can be violent too.
