The Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) raised over $97,000 to support its Senior Center in Cambridge during its largest golf tournament to date on Friday, September 11, 2026, at the Juniper Hill Golf Course in Northborough, MA.
Co-chaired by Rui Domingos, President and CEO of MIT Federal Credit Union, and Walter Sousa, founder of Inman Square Wine and Spirits, the 9th Chip In For Charity Golf Tournament raised a new record amount for the MAPS Senior Center, surpassing its $90,000 goal. All funds raised ensure that seniors continue to have access to a space designed to promote mental and physical health, as well as independent living in their own language and community. Presented by Couto Management Group, J&F Construction, and Naveo Credit Union, the tournament gathered more than 150 community members, business leaders, volunteers, and supporters, including 134 golfers.
“We are deeply grateful to our community and to our amazing sponsors and golfers for a wonderful and memorable golf tournament,” said Paulo Pinto, MPA, MAPS CEO. “The MAPS Senior Center has become a second home to countless seniors, and we are looking forward to having a very special 10th edition next year,” he added.
“This tournament was a remarkable achievement, and we look forward to growing it. Players look forward to it every year, a testament to its quality and purpose,” said Rui Domingos. “It is very encouraging to be surrounded by so many friends who want to provide important support for seniors in our communities,” highlighted Walter Sousa.
Two teams tied for first place, with a coin toss attributing the victory to Cafua’s Awesome Foursome, a first-time sponsor of the golf tournament, represented by golfers Paul Pierce, Mark Bouchard, David Broadhurst and Michael Wozniak. The second team was composed of John Crowley, Keith Gauthier, Justin Moran, and Raul Batallas. Third place went to Kevin Homem, Carlos Homem, Jonathan Spinelli, and Michael Amaral, from J&F Construction.
Each team was encouraged to be creative in their team name, making the final competition for best team name a little harder. Finally, the public’s favorite was “Four Flushers”, a name chosen by Tony Pereira, Jim Webb, Nuno Meireles, and Mike Pereira. Jose Trevino had the longest drive in the Men’s category, while John Raposo placed the ball closest to the pin. Stephanie Deering repeated her achievements from last year in the Women’s category, taking home the prize for longest drive and closest to the pin.
The MAPS Senior Center in Cambridge, open Mondays through Fridays, is a linguistically and culturally competent space designed to prevent isolation and promote wellness through case management and daily social and recreational activities, including exercise classes, arts and crafts, educational programs, and nutritious meals.
This year’s tournament began with a group photo and a moment of silence for the victims and families of 9/11, and it drew immense support from sponsors, starting with the three presenting sponsors: Couto Management Group, J&F Construction, and Naveo Credit Union.
Ten companies supported the Golf Tournament at the Titanium level: Amigos da Terça; Auxzillium IT Services and Solutions; Brite Builders, Inc.; Cafua Management Company; Greater Lowell Community Foundation; Lafuente Sign and Awning; Metalstone Technologies; MIT Federal Credit Union; S&F Concrete Contractors; and Sherwin Williams. The Joe & Dorothy Chaves Family Foundation sponsored the tournament at the Golf Cart level.
East Cambridge Savings Bank and Pacheco Jewelers sponsored the Luncheon Banquet, where MAPS seniors welcomed and thanked players with hand-drawn cards and chocolates.
On the course, MAPS provided lunch boxes to all players, courtesy of Casa Portugal Restaurant, CLM Auto, GEM Wealth Management, and Inman Square Wine & Spirits. Demelo Heating and Air Conditioning, Everclean Management Company, Massa Viana Law, and Rogers & Hutchins Funeral Home sponsored the breakfast spread.
Sponsors at the 150 Yard Marker level were Cambridge Printing Company, Law Office of Isaac Machado, and Paulo Pinto. The tournament also received support from Tee/Green sponsors A&L Line Transportation; Brum Flooring; Cooperative Credit Union Association; Demelo Heating and Air Conditioning; Greg, Hunt, Ahern & Embry Attorneys at Law; Inman Square Hardware; M.R.S. An online auction also helped MAPS raise much-needed funds in support of the center, with donations from the Law Office of Richard Mandel, Muqueca Restaurant, Juniper Hill Golf Course, Isotec Remodeling, Dan Morrissey, and Eduardo Pereira and Joao Arruda from USA Enterprise LLC, Framingham.
MAPS has served Portuguese speakers and other immigrant communities in Massachusetts since 1970.
