It is with deep sorrow and immense gratitude that we share the passing of Luis Pedroso, a cherished community leader and a steadfast champion of MAPS. Luis passed away on Friday, April 24, 2026, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer. His life was defined by generosity, vision, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting others.

For decades, Luis played a transformative role in shaping the Portuguese American community in Lowell and far beyond. Nearly 30 years ago, it was his visionary leadership and dedication that made the opening of the MAPS Lowell Office possible. Believing deeply in the importance of accessible, linguistically, and culturally competent services, he brought together leaders and rallied support to secure the funding needed to establish the office in 1997 and sustain it through its earliest years.

His commitment did not stop there. A decade later, Luis once again led efforts to expand services by helping to fund the creation of a Portuguese Senior Center, ensuring that older adults in our community would receive care, connection, and dignity. In 2021, he took immense pride in MAPS acquiring its permanent home on Central Street in Lowell. His generosity made possible the renovation of the building’s lobby, where a permanent plaque stands in tribute to his enduring legacy.

Because of Luis’s vision and tireless support, MAPS has been able to deliver critical health and social services to thousands of immigrants and families, empowering them to build healthier lives and stronger communities. His belief that every individual deserves to be treated with dignity and respect remains deeply embedded in our mission.

In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, MAPS honored Luis as Person of the Year in 2004. Yet his greatest legacy lies not in accolades, but in the lives he touched and the opportunities he created for others.

Luis gave selflessly to our programs, our organization, and our shared purpose. Even in his final weeks, he continued to offer guidance, encouragement, and support, ensuring his sponsorship of the MAPS 2026 Awards Gala. His devotion to his family and community never wavered.

We extend our deepest condolences to Luis’s family and loved ones. His absence will be profoundly felt, but his spirit will continue to guide and inspire our work every day. His legacy lives on in the communities he strengthened and the countless lives he helped transform.
